Welcome to the first instalment of our new blog series, Becoming B Corp. In this series, we'll take you behind the scenes as we embark on the transformative journey to becoming a certified B Corp. We'll share the ups and downs we encounter along the way. But before diving deeper, let’s start with the basics—what exactly does it mean to be a B Corp, and why is this journey important to us?
Put simply, a B Corp is a business certified by B Lab, an independent organization that recognizes companies meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. The B Corp certification evaluates businesses across five key areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers, ensuring a holistic approach to social and environmental responsibility. Think of it as the gold standard for companies dedicated to making a positive difference.
Why B Corp Matters to Us
Our inspiration began when we noticed other impactful businesses successfully taking on the B Corp challenge. Their journeys sparked an idea - What more can we be doing to enhance our positive impact?
Many core B Corp values already resonate deeply with our company ethos. Yet, the certification process offers a structured roadmap, highlighting further opportunities to enhance our practices, empowering our people, and improving our business from within.
Joining the B Corp community means collaborating with like-minded businesses. Who wouldn’t want to work alongside passionate, purpose-driven organisations? It’s an exciting chance to attract and engage talented individuals who share our vision and values.
Starting our Journey
In October 2023, we relocated to a new office space, giving us greater control over decisions like selecting suppliers and managing our energy sources. This felt like the ideal opportunity to consciously align our operations with our values.
Our first step on the B Corp journey was completing an initial audit—a comprehensive questionnaire designed to assess our current standing. We scored 51 points, which, while below the 80-point threshold needed to certify, is fairly typical for companies at the start of their B Corp journey in our industry. To guide us effectively through this complex process, we've partnered with B Corp expert Jenn from Cyd Connect. With B Corp standards set to update in early 2026, we're aiming to submit our application before December 2026 to ensure alignment with the current certification requirements.
