The Gatwick Diamond Business Awards never fails to throw an extravagant event that brings together the greatest business talent in the Gatwick region. Needless to say, Cloud9 were thrilled when our very own Rob Wiles was nominated for Apprentice of the Year 2018.

The prestigious award recognises the outstanding efforts and progress of an apprentice who has been enrolled on a government funded programme before August 2017 and works for an employer who is committed to the apprenticeship agenda.

Cloud9’s Rob, is near completion of a Level 3 apprenticeship in IT infrastructure which was supported by the training provider, 3aaa. They partner with Microsoft to train young people in the technologies that play a crucial role in the IT business across the UK.

This is not the first time Cloud9 have been recognised for nurturing an outstanding apprentice as in 2012 David Robertson won the Microsoft Apprentice of the Year thanks to the backing of Microsoft’s Britain Works programme. We have since offered long-term career placements to apprentices on completion of their courses, sponsored MBAs, created leadership opportunities and increased apprenticeships throughout departments.

Carlene Jackson, CEO of Cloud9 Insight, believes the energy apprentices bring to the business has afforded the company with new and updated skills. She said:

“Cloud9 Insight are extremely proud of Rob for this achievement. Ever since joining Cloud9, Rob has been a model of maturity and a committed learner who has grown along with the business. Rob has been a key part of the delivery team who has built sector specific Dynamics 365 solutions for our clients. He is a true asset to the business.”

A champion of apprenticeship schemes, Carlene has written an A-Z blueprint– geared towards SMEs – on how to hire and manage apprentices from her successful experience.

Two years ago when I decided to take the apprenticeship route to kick start my career in IT, I did not imagine that I would be here at Cloud9 winning the award for Apprentice of the Year in the Gatwick region. I am thankful to Cloud9 for their ongoing investment in me. Well done also to all the other finalists for this Award, it is great to see hard working apprentices being celebrated. Thank you to the Reigate and Banstead judges for selecting me as the winner of the award.”

A judge for the category, Simon Bland of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council said:

“Robert impressed the judges with his calm, mature and considered attitude and it was evident that he is a very valued part of the team. His overall contribution would be notable for someone with many more years’ experience. To be such a high performing member of the team as a young apprentice is an outstanding achievement. He is an exceptional young man working in an organisation clearly committed to the Apprenticeship agenda.”
